Diagnostic Characteristics

  • Leaves are reddish-green, oblong, and about 3″ long, with distinct wavy edges
  • Stems flat, reddish-brown and 1 to 3′ long

Background

  • Spreads from rhizomes and turions in the fall and is fullgrown by spring
  • Tolerates cold water and low light conditions
  • Summer die-back may reduce dissolved oxygen levels and spark algae blooms

  • Many native pondweeds, but only Curlyleaf has the characteristic crinkled leaf edges
