Diagnostic Characteristics
- Leaves are reddish-green, oblong, and about 3″ long, with distinct wavy edges
- Stems flat, reddish-brown and 1 to 3′ long
Background
- Spreads from rhizomes and turions in the fall and is fullgrown by spring
- Tolerates cold water and low light conditions
- Summer die-back may reduce dissolved oxygen levels and spark algae blooms
Similar Plants
- Many native pondweeds, but only Curlyleaf has the characteristic crinkled leaf edges
